A question of taste
Do we laugh or do we love?
A question I often ask myself in today’s ‘experimental’ style climate.
Pioneering this movement is Lady Gaga who straddles fashion’s divide between the avant-garde and the ridiculous, a self mocking witticism playing on her painted lips.
And on her head? Why, bunny ears of course.
The culprit? Maison Michel, Paris’ oldest and best respected millinery house directed by Chanel since 1966.
Not your average fancy dress, particularly at £250 a pop and crafted from exquisite black lace.
No, this concept begs to be reconsidered as a serious accessory, gracing the heads of the Olsen twins among others.
Maison Michel’s ready-to-wear line of hair accessories for A/W 09 are both elegant and macabre with more than a hint of irony, creating inspiration to mould and mix pieces when creating a look.
Louis Vuitton has followed suite and created a more abstract, twisted rabbit ear headpiece recently sported by Madonna (admittedly not the greatest accolade) and, more impressively, Natalia Vodianova on the cover of Vogue. Surely, if Vogue likes it…
Our faithful and seemingly fearless friend Topshop seems to be one of the only high street stores championing the trend as of yet, offering a pair of nude bunny ears with netting (below).
But when seen off the heads of the rich and famous and on the heads of normal people, the whole ‘fashion’s divide between the ridiculous and the avant-garde’ thing soon goes out the window, leaving only ‘ridiculous’.
Never mind, it’s Easter soon…
