M & S: School uniforms and old lady-clothes? I think not.
My first thought when I opened a £10 M & S voucher on Chrsitmas day was: that's a lot of Percy Pigs I am going to have to buy.
It didn't even cross my mind that I might actually buy clothes from there.
A few years ago when you thought of Marks and Spencer you might have though: great food; school uniform, Mum-Dad-Nanna- Grandad clothes. Most certainly not fashionable clothes.
Then along came Twiggy and some other iconic faces: Erin O'Connor, Jade Jagger and most recently Lily Cole.
From then on my perception, along with many others (due to reportedly huge profits), began to change and M & S seemed almost... cool?
Saying that, I still hadn't purchased anything more than tights, one hand bag and some knickers from there.
But with my £10 voucher in hand I thought I would persue the aisles and then worst case scenario I could enjoy my Percy Pigs on the drive home.
I'm not trying to say that everything they sell is fashionable, far from. But that is because they appeal to all ages ranges; from 1 to 101 M & S sell clothes suitable for all.
However, I am more interested in what they sell that is suitable for someone around the age of 21 and it appears the answer is: more than I thought.
Their "limited collection" is actually really good; Per Una is OK but more suited to picking something good for your Mum; their general clothes lines - forget it.
I managed to pick up two dresses in the sale (but had to take one back for the sake of my overdraft's health).
One was a black, strapless number with some on-trend studs adorning the bust; the other was a square-necked, hot-pink, body-con inspired mini.
I managed to pick between them because I saw the pink one in three magazines in one day; plus, it was labelled in them as being £35 but with my deduction of the £10 voucher it cost me only £7! Major bargain alert.
That probably doesn't sound like the typical M & S stock to you - but the great news is their new collection looks even better.
It isn't cheap and you definitely can't get student discount but that chances are not many people will be wearing it in the union so you will definitely stand out.
