Notes: An Introduction to... Foo Fighters
Every Monday, Sam tirelessly brings you the lowdown on all of those bands you really should know by now. Click the links to hear more.
From the ashes of seminal grunge band Nirvana, Foo Fighters was originally a side-project of Dave Grohl, who recorded the self-titled first album by himself, playing all instruments (barring some assistance from Greg Dulli from Afghan Whigs).
While certainly not having the legacy most mainstream media attribute unto Nirvana, Foo Fighters have a broader approach, with perhaps a deceptively more commercial sound, but still tackling themes like suicide (Still), self-esteem (Best of You), identity (Generator) and good ol' fashioned love (Aurora).
Completed by a roster of knowledgeable, skilled musicians (Pat Smear from The Germs, Nate Mendel from Sunny Day Real State), Foo Fighters became a monster of Americana rock, playing throwbacks to famous bands (UFO, Rush) while also showing some influences from more obscure acts (Germs, Sunny Day Real State, Flipper, Kyuss).
Foo Fighters always had a knack for funny, memorable videos, even poking fun of their own rock personas. They also have a knack for working with impressive directors, like Michel Gondry (who reused his own ideas from 'Everlong' in his film The Science of Sleep) or Mark Pellington.
Although now on “hiatus”, each band member is currently active on alternate projects, each creating music in their own particular style.
