Exploring Sheffield: Marta visits... The Cremorne

Every Wednesday, Marta brings a slice of the Mediterranean to Sheffield to see if the music scene really differs at all.

There has been a terrible virus going around Sheffield, and as a foreigner it took me a while to realize what it was all about: exams.

In Italy, each faculty has its own exams calendar, so students don’t take them altogether. But here, for the second part of January, the city has been as silent as it can be. Pubs closed down, a virtual curfew was put after 10pm. and everybody was sucked up in a vortex of tensions, horrors and reviewing. It was only last week that I went out for the first time, carrying terrible guilt-feelings with me at all times.

But it was worth it: The Cremorne is a lovely pub and it organized a concert with two bands that could not possibly be any more different, even though they are both from Sheffield.

TheFallen Trees, a guitar & drums duo, are a very typical melodic rock band. Paul Littlewood’s voice is vibrant and emotional, the guitar and the drums add rhythm and strength. The result is a romantic, melancholic cocktail which is very effective if you want to walk alone in the snow for a while.

Afterwards, like the other side of the moon, the Glistening Pelt brought electronic pre-recordings, pop mocking and a cool, detached voice to cheer up the audience. The 5 of them, dressed as mariners, live up to the expectations of their names perfectly, complete with a brilliant, ‘80s look. They define themselves as disco house/tropical/zouk and it’s probably the best definition for what they do.

I suggest you take the two bands together, one after another (or vice-versa depending to the final mood you are looking for) or shaking them up for a very good, post-exams Sheffield cocktail.
